Amsterdam’s Top Cocktail Bars

The nightlife of a major city could never be complete without Cocktail Bars. Amsterdam, like other major cities in the world, has found itself in the midst of a drinking revolution. Going to an average bar, and drinking the same Gin and Tonic you can buy anywhere, just isn’t enough.  More frequently people are looking to find the craft and elegance, normally reserved for fine dining, in their cocktail glass.

Amsterdam is making quite a name for itself within the Cocktail industry. Their Bars and Bartenders are winning awards worldwide for their recipes, techniques, and amazing atmosphere!

Here are our Top Picks!!

Hiding in Plain Sight – Hiding in Plain Sight, is a genuine Amsterdam gem. Set off the beaten path, this is a destination location. But, don’t let that fool you! This intelligent, stylish, and charming bar; is full to the brim with locals from the neighborhood, and international travelers, seeking the atmosphere and service only HPS can provide. They advise making a reservation, especially on the weekends. The High Fashion interior has been as meticulously constructed as the cocktails and their presentations. They serve strong, balanced drinks for every palate, and have rare bottles from all over the world. The menus alone are photo worthy, and when your drinks arrive, you’ll be sure to keep snapping those photos. Posh but not pretentious, HPS is the kind of place that becomes your favorite bar the moment you walk through the door.

Door 74 – Arguably the most famous cocktail bar on our list, Door 74 is sexy, urban, and edgy. With award winning Cocktail Shakers, and a menu of undeniable drinks, this place serves up fun with an unforgettable amount of cool. Hidden behind a Simple Black Door reading “74”, you could easily mistake it for someone’s home.  But with a gentle knock, a peek hole slides open, and a voice from inside asks you “how many”. If there is room, the door opens, and you are transported into another time. Door 74, is  like John Wayne; it isn’t trying to be bad-ass… it just is. This is truly the speakeasy vibe that compliments amazing classic cocktails.

Dvars – Dvars is definitely the largest of all the cocktail bars on our list. This gives it a unique opportunity to transform from a lounge in the early evening, to a full on club later at night. Their walls are all lined with massive, GORGEOUS, fish tanks all modeled after one of the Earths oceans. It has 2 full bars, one in front, and one in back, with plush bar stools. You can be right in the action, or find your self a cozy table tucked in between the tanks, for more privacy. Their bartenders are friendly and obviously love making cocktails. They are happy to tailor a drink to your personal preference, and encourage you to try something new. They have a full kitchen with menu options both large and small. Dvars is located in the near the bustling Center of Amsterdam, and they are certainly not going anywhere soon. Happy hour or party hour, Dvars doesn’t disappoint.

Tunes Bar in The Conservatorium Hotel  – Tunes Bar has the most impressive architecture of any other cocktail bar on our list. Chic and sophisticated, it is the perfect compliment to the breathtaking Conservatorium Hotel, in which it is housed. The newly renovated, and totally jaw dropping, hotel, was once The Sweelinck Conservatory of music. Now guests travel from around the world to experience the beauty of its accommodations. Tunes Bar is no exception. With a long sexy high top table in the center and a discreet private smoking area above, Tunes is the perfect place for a posh happy hour.

Vesper – A great place for some great cocktails! Vesper is located in the Historic Jordaan Area of Amsterdam. Don’t let the cozy and friendly atmosphere fool you, because their cocktails are fierce! They offer special activities for groups, such as “High Urban Tea” or even cocktail workshops.  A great place to stop in after some serious shopping in the Jordaan, and of course, no visit would be complete without sampling the famous “Vesper Martini”,  for which they were named.

The Butcher – Hiding secretly in the back of a burger joint on the Albert Cuypstraat, The Butcher is not a place tourists will find easily. The only entrance to the bar is a secret door with a buzzer, in the secret back, of this secret burger joint. You could sit down, eat a burger, and never even know there was an entire club behind  you! Unless you know the password, which you get by making a reservation, this mysterious door won’t open. However, if you call ahead and make a reservation for cocktails, the door opens to a whole new world of awesome. Sexy ambiance and drinks to match, The Butcher is a one-of-a-kind adventure.

They have a small bar area upon entering and several small tables, both upstairs and down.  During the summer months, they have a large outdoor seating area full of happy customers, enjoying the sun.  Franklin is only a few blocks from the South entrance of  Amsterdam’s famous Vondelpark, and it is the perfect place to relax for a nice dinner and drinks, after a stroll in the park.
