Het Amsterdmse Bos (“the forest”) is a huge park on the outer edge of Amsterdam.  It was built in the 1930s as a government project to alleviate unemployment due to the great depression.  Het Bos has almost every kind of outdoor activity imaginable, several campgrounds, and tons of space to stretch your legs.  It is definitely worth exploring if the weather is nice and you want to spend a day outdoors.

If you are on foot, take the metro to stop Amstelveensweg.   The entrance is at the intersection of Van Nijenrodeweg and Amstelveensweg.   By bike, follow the red signs from Vondelpark, headed generally southeast towards Schiphol.

At the main entrance to the forest, (Van Nijenrodeweg, which turns into Bosbaanweg ) there is a visitors center with information about activities and maps to het Bos.

Het Bos has its own website here.
